Saluki Personality

The Saluki is a sleek and adventurous breed. These dogs are very smart and independent. This can make them a very entertaining addition to the home, but also means that training can be a challenge, especially for first time owners. However, with proper training and socialization these dogs can be well behaved companions. They still retain many natural qualities of their hunting hound heritage, so they may be wary or aloof around any new people, but they are rarely ever aggressive. However, they will not hesitate to alert their owners to any intruders with a string of barks. Salukis are highly adaptable, able to thrive in a variety of living situations, from apartment living to rural life. These dogs can fit well into almost any home so long as their owner is willing and able to dedicate enough time and effort to give these dogs the guidance and affection that they crave.

History

Saluki History & Lineage

The Saluki is a very old breed, whose ancestors were likely bread in the Fertile Crescent. It is believed that crusaders, returning to Europe, brought a number of these dogs back with them from the Middle East. Although attempts were made by several parties to keep these dogs purebred, other influences inevitably found their way into the line, resulting in the Salukis we know today. With these dogs traveling to North America around the turn of the 20th century, these dogs, though still small in number, gained enough attention to be officially recognized by the AKC in 1927. Today these dogs continue to find their way into the hearts and homes of both breeders and dog lovers alike.

Saluki Medical Challenges

The Saluki is considered to be a predominantly healthy breed, free from any life threatening genetic diseases. However, some of these dogs have been known to experience other issues, such as heart conditions, certain forms of cancer, as well as some autoimmune and blood conditions, though most of these dogs live full lives without serious issue. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to keep on top of any issues that may occur. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your vet about cardiac exams and thyroid evaluations for your Saluki, to help you better understand and ensure their continued health. Your Saluki will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring you smiles and joy.
