Papillon Care

History

Papillon History & Lineage

The Papillon, referred to as the Epagneul Nain in non english speaking countries, were developed and bred all across France, England, and Belgium. The Papillon is actually considered a subtype of the Epagneul. The Papillon’s tall, erect ears are contrasted by the drooped ears of the Phalène dogs, both coming from the same litter. Although the droopy ear Phalène has gained in popularity recently, the Papillon has always been the more common and popular of the two. In 1935 a Parent Club was formed and the Papillon was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Second World War would have its effect on the club, and by 1945 it was all but disbanded. Thankfully, the club was able to resume functioning 1948 and still operates today.

Papillon Medical Challenges

The Papillon is considered to be a mostly healthy breed, though they are not completely impervious to all ailments. It is important to check with the breeder about health screenings to help you better understand what you can expect. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to keep on top of your dog’s health, as well as to treat any issues that they may experience. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your vet about Patella evaluations, ophthalmologist evaluations and cardiac exams for your Papillon to help you gain a better understanding of any potential problems. Always be sure to contact your vet right away if you have any serious concerns for the health and wellbeing of your dog.Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring joy.
