History

Koolie History & Lineage

Koolies have a long history of being popular working dogs on the Australian continent. They are believed to have originated during the 19th century and are descended from imported Collie type dogs, including the Blue Merle Collie and the Black and Tan Collie. Towards the end of the 20th century, efforts began to preserve the breed and the Koolie Club of Australia was formed in 2000 for this purpose. However, there is the belief that a bench standard could affect the dogs being used for work in the future, so currently there are no efforts being made to push for a breed standard. Thanks to the efforts of their parent club though, the Koolie was officially recognized by the Australian sporting Registrar in 2004. The breed was also added to the American Herding Breed Association’s list of recognised and accepted herding breeds in 2006.

Koolie Medical Challenges

The Koolie is considered to be a predominantly healthy breed, though these dogs can still experience certain issues, including problems with their hearing and eyesight. It is important to check with the breeder for any health screenings they have done on breeding stock to give you a better idea of what you can expect with your dog. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will also play an important role in helping you to keep on top of your dog’s health, as well as to promptly treat any issues that they may experience. Always be sure to contact your vet right away if you have any serious concerns for your Koolie’s condition. Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring joy to the home.
