Keeshond Personality

The Keeshond is a highly intelligent, agile and affectionate dog in an adorable package. Easily trained and always eager for praise, they have even seen use as service and guide dogs. Only their small size keeps them from being seen in these roles more often. Maybe they aren’t the best guard dogs because of their sociable and friendly nature, but they can be rather vocal and are not afraid to herald the arrival of any strangers into the house. They get along well with other dogs and children of all ages. This and their ability to keep up with a busy family, without being hyperactive has made them a popular choice for those looking to bring a new pet into their homes. The Keeshond is also very adaptable to a variety of different living situations, able to do well in small family homes to wide open spaces. As long as they get the attention and time to spend with their families, these dogs are usually in high spirits and can bring plenty of joy to those they bond with.

History

Keeshond History & Lineage

Keeshond was originally the title given to all German Spitz dogs before they began to make their way into recognized categories in kennel clubs. These dogs had originally been called the Wolfspitz when it was first bred. Although many believe that the breed originated in the Netherlands, many sources have cited the breed as being a part of the German Spitz family. The first Wolfspitz standard came in 1880, when it was posted at a Berlin Dog Show that year. In 1888 the first parent club for the breed would also be formed. Many revisions were made to the breed standard over the next century to either better specify the characteristics of the breed or to change their categorization. In 1926, the breed was finally recognized by the British Kennel Club and was officially renamed “Keeshond.” However, due to the unpopularity of german breeds after the second world war, it would take time and the dedicated work of one Mr. Carl Hinderer, to get the breed recognized in the U.S. After constantly writing to the AKC, and presenting one of his Keeshond dogs to the president of the club in 1930, the breed was finally recognized by the AKC the same year.

Keeshond Medical Challenges

The Keeshond is considered to be a predominantly hardy and healthy breed, although these dogs can still experience some issues common to similar breeds. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to avoid or treat any health issues your Keeshond may experience. The National Breed Club also suggest that you speak with your veterinarian about hip, elbow, patella and ophthalmologist exams to help you better understand and ensure your dog’s health. Be sure to contact your veterinarian right away if you have any serious concerns about the health of your Keeshond. Your dog will be grateful for the loving care that you provide for them and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring you joy.
