History
Kangal Dog History & Lineage
The Kangal Dog is known to have originated in Turkey, but unfortunately there is still much about their history that we do not know for certain. It is thought that the breed was developed from a variety of mastiff type dogs, but this remains speculation.
These dogs have a long history of livestock protection and herding. They were proven to be dependable guardians against large predators, including wolves and bears.
Kangals first began to appear in the United States around the 1980’s. From these first few dogs a foundation stock was built, from which an American presence of the breed has been developed.

Kangal Dog Medical Challenges
The Kangal Dog is considered to be a predominantly healthy breed, but it will still be important to check with the breeder for health tests done on their breeding stock. This will give you a much better idea of what you can expect for your pup. Annual checkups will also play an important role in helping your Kangal maintain good health, or to promptly treat any issues they may face. Always be sure to contact your vet right away if you have any serious concerns for the health and well being of your dog. Your Kangal will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to fill their homes with joy.
