Irish Setter Personality

Irish Setters are confident and affectionate dogs that can do very well in a family home. They are friendly with other dogs as well as kids in the home, though they can sometimes be a bit too energetic for very small children and supervision is still recommended. Visitors will also have an easy time getting along with them, since they are typically eager to make new friends. Smaller animals should be wary around them though, since their hunting instincts are still present in the breed. These dogs love to get outside and be active with their families. They are always up for a hike or some outdoor play but will usually be calm when indoors. The Irish Setter’s naturally sensitive nature also makes them widely sought after as therapy dogs.

History

Irish Setter History & Lineage

Setters were popularized in Ireland by the 18th century, and selective breeding to result in a mostly red, or all red coat seems to have led to the origins of the Irish Setter breed. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1884. However, the first breed standard for the Irish Setter would not be written until 1886 and approved the same year on March 29th. More than a century later, aside from a few minor changes, the original breed standard is still the one used today for these dogs. Today these dogs can still be found performing duties and bringing joy to many homes, both in their native homeland as well as abroad.

Irish Setter Medical Challenges

The Irish Setter is considered to be a mostly healthy breed, though some of them may still experience certain issues, including hip dysplasia, thyroid and eye conditions. Be sure to check with the breeder for any health screenings that they have done on their breeding stock to give you a better idea of what you can expect for your dog. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to keep on top of your dog’s health, as well as to promptly treat any issues that they may experience. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your vet about thyroid and hip evaluations, as well as a PRA optigen test for your Irish Setter. Always be sure to contact your vet right away if you have any serious concerns about their condition. Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring joy into the home.
