Havanese Personality

These dogs are very loving and affectionate. They form strong bonds with their owners and will often be found not far behind them. Because they have such a strong craving for the attention of their families, they do not do well in homes where they are left alone for long periods. As long as they can get the affection and activity that they need, they are typically friendly and fun loving companions. They love to play with their families, but their small size means their exercise needs are easily met and they can do well even in an apartment setting. Other pets and children in the home can get along well with these dogs too. They rarely bark and will warm the hearts of those that get to know them with their adoring personality.

Havanese Care

History

Havanese History & Lineage

Belonging to the Bichon family of dogs, the Havanese is believed to have been developed from dogs of Tenerife that had been imported to Cuba. These dogs quickly became popular companions for Spanish colonists living in Cuba, as well as the local nobility. Though very few of these dogs were able to come the the US with their owners fleeing the revolution, what few made it to America spurred a curiosity in the breed among many fanciers. When breeding in America began in the 1970’s, there were as little as 11 Havanese to make up the breeding stock. Since they were officially recognized by the AKC in 1996, great strides have been made to bolster their population. They are currently one of the fastest growing breeds in the AKC and were ranked as the 25th most popular purebred in North America in 2013.

Havanese Medical Challenges

The Havanese is considered to be a predominantly healthy breed, though they may still be prone to hearing and eye disorders, patellar luxation and heart murmurs. However, most of these dogs live full and healthy lives without any serious issue. Be sure to check with the breeder for any health screenings they have done. This can give you a much better idea of what you can expect with your havanese. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to keep up with your dog’s health, as well as to promptly treat any issues they may experience. Always be sure to contact your vet right away if you have any serious concerns for the health and well being of your dog. Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring you joy.
