Dalmatian Personality

Dalmatians are alert and affectionate dogs. They are protective of their families but not aggressive with strangers. They are able to do well in a number of living situations and tend to have a very even temperament so long as they are properly raised and socialized. Their protective nature, and ability to get along with children in the home has made them a popular choice for those looking or a canine companion to bring home to their growing family. However, these dogs will do just as well bonding to a single owner, though they may not handle being left alone for long periods very well. It is helpful to ensure that there is always someone at home with them.

Dalmatian Care

History

Dalmatian History & Lineage

The Dalmatian is believed to have originated in Croatia as far back as the 17th or 18th century, though the bulk of cultivating and developing the breed was done in England. These dogs became a status symbol, as they were popularly used to run alongside stage coaches, ensuring that the occupants and cargo remain guarded and safe. Their protective nature had also earned them the job of guarding stables during that time. The first standard for the breed was submitted in 1882, and in 1890 it would be officially accepted as the standard, after the formation of the first parent club for the breed. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1888.

Dalmatian Medical Challenges

Dalmatians are considered to be a mostly healthy breed, though some of these dogs have been known to experience some issues such as hearing problems, joint dysplasia and kidney stones. However, most Dalmatians live full lives without any serious health problems. Annual checkups with your vet will play an important role in helping you to keep on top of your dog’s health. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your vet about hip evaluations, as well as BAER testing to help you to better understand and ensure the continued health of your Dalmatian. Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show their appreciation that will continue to bring you smiles and joy.
