History

Cesky Fousek History & Lineage

The Cesky Fousek had its beginnings in the ancient Kingdom of Bohemia, now known as the Czech Republic. The Breed is believed to date back as far as the 14th century, with reference to the breed being found in literature of the time. Although, despite these clues to the origins of the breed, it was not clearly identified as a separate breed until 1883. For centuries, the Cesky Fousek was used as a strong tracking and hunting dog in the region. But unfortunately, by the end of the first world war the breed had almost completely disappeared. Although some breeders who were fans of the breed formed a club in an attempt to save the breed, the Cesky Fousek remained in low numbers. The Second world war would also take its toll on the Cesky population. Although the association for the Cesky would be able to survive through the war, and by war’s end those breeders who were still fans of the breed began again to attempt to revive the breed, although their numbers still remained rather low. Czechoslovakia would go on to join the FCI in 1957, and their goal was to fully revive and document the Cesky Fousek. Through their efforts, the breed was finally able to rise to a healthy population and in 1958 a breed standard was written and approved by the FCI. The Cesky Fousek was finally recognized formally as its own unique breed in 1964. Since then their popularity among breeders and owners around the world continues to grow slowly, and they remain such a popular breed in their home country that the breed has even been depicted on local postage stamps.

Cesky Fousek Medical Challenges

Like many dogs, Some Ceskys can experience issues such as joint dysplasia, patellar luxation, cardiac and eye problems. However, this breed is considered to be a predominantly healthy one with most dogs living full lives without any serious health issue. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will help you to keep on top of any developing health issues. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your veterinarian about cardiac, patella and dentition exams and evaluations to help you better understand and ensure the health of your Cesky Fousek. Always be sure to contact your veterinarian if you have any serious concerns for your dog’s health. Your Cesky will be grateful for the loving care you provide them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring a smile to your face.
