Bull Terrier Personality

Brave and loyal, Bull Terriers can be very obedient and loving. They tend to get along well with other people, as well as any children in the home. However, they can be rather stubborn and may do best with an experienced owner that can give them the proper socialization and training that they need. Although these dogs have a small reputation for being rough and tumble, they are rarely aggressive and find their way into many loving homes as affectionate family pets. Though their temperament will rely heavily on their early socialization. In fact, in 2008, Germany found that Bull Terriers have a very similar temperament to Golden Retrievers during Temperament studies.

History

Bull Terrier History & Lineage

Bull and Terrier Breeds have existed since the beginning of the 19th century. Originally bred to be used for vermin control, these dogs were based on Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs. Unfortunately, there was an absence of breeding standards during this period, so little was done to preserve the breed in its form from this time. By the middle of the 19th century, one James Hinks began to breed Bull and Terriers with English White Terriers in an attempt to clean up the look of the breed. In 1862, Hinks entered one of his dogs into the dog show at Cremorne Gardens in Chelsea, under the Bull and Terrier group. The dogs immediately rose to high popularity, known as Hinks Breed, or The White Cavalier. Over time, Dalmatian, Whippet, Borzoi, Rough Collie and Spanish Pointer were added to the blood line to help round out more of the dogs appearance, eventually leading to the egg shape heads we are used to seeing on modern day Bull Terriers. Because of the inherent health issues in the all white coat color breeding in these dogs, colored versions began to appear as the issues were corrected by adding Staffordshire Bull Terriers around the 20th century, leading to the Bull Terriers as we know them today.

Bull Terrier Medical Challenges

Some Bull Terriers have been known to experience issues such as patellar luxation, joint dysplasia, kidney and heart issues. However, they do not seem to be at any higher risk for these ailments than other similar breeds, and most Bull Terriers will live full lives without any serious issue. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play and important role in helping you to address any issues that may arise, as well as to properly treat them. The National Breed Club also suggests that owners speak with their vets about cardiac exams, kidney-urine analysis, patella evaluations and BAER testing to help you better understand and ensure the health of your Bull Terrier. Your pup will be grateful for all the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring you smiles and joy.
