History

Brittany History & Lineage

Like many other dogs, this breed takes its name from the region it originated in. The breed had its beginnings in the Brittany region of northwest France some time around the mid 19th century. Since the beginning of the breed, the Brittany has been used as a faithful hunting companion and retriever. However, the affectionate and personable character of the Brittany quickly gave rise to their popularity as a family pet and a show dog. The first Brittany appeared in a Paris Dog Show in 1900 and by 1907 the breed had been officially recognized in France. The Brittany went on to gain a healthy following around the world, and in 1934 the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Brittany Medical Challenges

Like most dogs, some Brittany’s can experience issues such as joint dysplasia, ear infections, bloat and thyroid conditions. However, the breed is a predominantly healthy one and most dogs live full lives without any serious health issue. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will help you to keep on top of any developments in the health of your Brittany. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your veterinarian about hip and ophthalmologist evaluations to better understand and ensure the health of your dog. Be sure to contact your veterinarian right away if you have any serious concerns for the health and well being of your Brittany. Your dog will be grateful for the loving care you provide for them and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will bring even more joy into your lives.
