Barbet Personality
The Barbet is and adorable medium size dog who wants nothing more than to spend their time enjoying the company of their human families. They get along well with adults and children alike, lending to their recent popularity as a family pet.
Originally bred as hunting retrievers, the Barbet loves to be active and playful with the family, but they also excel in certain competition which can be a fun way to keep them in shape. They are surprisingly strong swimmers as well, having webbed paws they can use for just that purpose.
The faithful nature and friendly demeanor of this spritely dog make them a fantastic addition to the family or the best friend of a single owner. Whether in a suburban home or roaming large property, the Barbet just wants to enjoy their time with those they form a strong bond with.

History
Barbet History & Lineage
The Barbet that we know today first originated in france around the 19th century. The breed began as a working dog, primarily known for their use as waterfowl retrievers by French hunters.
For nearly a century, Barbets and Poodles were considered to be the same breed due to their close relation, but in 1891 the standard for the Barbet was written and they could finally be officially distinguished as their own breed.
Today the breed’s popularity continues to grow, both in France and abroad. Although, recently the Barbet seems to attract more of those who are looking for a family pet than a working dog. Today you are more likely to see a Barbet soaking up affection from their human families than being put to work.

Barbet Medical Challenges
The Barbet is a sturdy Breed not prone to many serious health problems. Some dogs can experience issues like hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA, and Seizure disorders, but most dogs of this breed live full lives with little issue. Annual check ups with your veterinarian will help you better ensure the continued health of your Barbet. The Parent Club also suggest talking to your vet about hip and elbow evaluations as well as PRA/PRCD and dilution factor tests to better understand your Barbets health.
