The Akita is a brave and strong willed breed of dog with a personality that is hard to forget. Their energetic spirit and unmovable loyalty to those that they bond with has made them a favorite among many experienced owners. These dogs have a strong will of their own and without a firm but gentle hand to raise and guide them they may decide to follow their own plan over yours which is why they are not suggested for first time dog owners. However, for those with the right experience and leadership qualities these dogs can be a wonderful companion and guardian. When raised properly, Akitas are friendly, playful and ever faithful and watchful dogs who can keep up the pace on those busy days or joyfully laze around the house with you. Their versatility makes them adaptable to a variety of living situations and although they are mostly a one person dog, with early socialization and training, they can be a great addition to the family as well.

History

Akita History & Lineage

The Akitas that we know today have been primarily developed from dogs native to the Akita prefecture on the island of Honshū, although their ancestry suggests that they are descended from the Matagi, one of the oldest native breeds of dog in Japan. Since the beginning of the breed, these dogs were prized hunting dogs among royal families in Japan, trained to The Akita was even declared to be a Japanese Natural Monument in 1931, and in 1936 the first breed standard was written for the Akita. Helen Keller even took a particular interest in the breed when she visited Japan in 1937 and ended up bringing 2 of the dogs back home with her. These first two dogs to reach the U.S. would, in great part, bring about the writing of a new breed standard in 1939. During the second world war, German Shepherd influences were added to the Akita line in order to save the breed from culling since it was considered not to have military use at the time. Thanks to this, the breed was able to survive the war and populations were able to rise once again. Today these dogs have become a favorite of many breeders and owners all over the world thanks to their lovable character and the hard work of those who sought to see the breed survive into the future so that they could continue to spread their love and joy.

Akita Medical Challenges

Some Akitas can deal with issues such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, thyroid issues and bloat, although the breed is a predominantly healthy one with most dogs living full lives without any serious issue. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will help you to keep on top of the well being of your dog. The National Breed Club also suggest speaking with your veterinarian about ophthalmologist, hip and thyroid evaluations to help you better understand and ensure the continued health of your Akita. Be sure to contact your veterinarian right away if you have any serious concern about the health of your dog. Your Akita will be grateful for the loving care you give them and they will find plenty of ways to show it as they continue to bring love and joy to your life.
