Whippet Personality

Generally quiet and well tempered, the Whippet is an affectionate breed who enjoys nothing more than the company of their loved ones. They are strong runners who will literally leap at every opportunity to use those powerful legs to race around outdoors. They are loyal and well behaved, getting along well with most people and children. They are not known to be very aggressive, though they may be prone to chasing other small pets and animals, due to their coursing nature. Whippets are not likely to bark much, and they are generally content to spend most of their time curled up with their owners, so long as they are getting the exercise they need. Thought they crave their family’s attention and love, they can be rather touch sensitive, and need a gentle touch when being handled or pet to avoid startling them.

History

Whippet History & Lineage

Whippets originated in Great Britain, and were the result of English Greyhounds that were considered to small for stag hunting by the nobility of the time. These dogs were often returned to the breeders, who would continue to breed them into a smaller version of these Greyhounds. They were used primarily for rodent control and hunting small game, such as hares. Whippet racing also became popular in England during the 19th century, and though they were popular dogs in England and Wales, they were generally overlooked throughout the rest of Europe. The U.S. would recognize the Whippet as a unique breed in 1888, and in 1891, The Kennel Club would also give the whipper official recognition. Today these lovable pups are more commonly found as affectionate pets, rather than hunting dogs, though their instincts have not faded much and some still find themselves accompanying their owners on hare hunts.

Whippet Medical Challenges

The Whippet is a predominantly healthy breed. Some of these dogs have been known to experience heart and eye issues, as well as some other minor ailments. However, most of these dogs live full lives without any serious issue. The Whippet is not suited for carrying extra weight and are far more prone to injury if overweight. Making sure that they maintain a healthy weight will greatly help to improve their longevity and quality of life. Annual checkups with your veterinarian will play an important role in helping you to keep up with any changes in your dog’s health. The National Breed Club also suggests that you speak with your vet about ophthalmologist exams, cardiac exams, and BAER testing to help you better understand and ensure your Whippet’s health. Always be sure to contact your veterinarian right away if you have any serious concerns about the health or well being of your Whippet. Your pup will be grateful for all of the loving care that you provide for them, and they will be sure to find plenty of ways to show it that will continue to bring you joy.
